Penghu archipelago (Pescadores) composed of 64 big and small islands is a string of pearls sprinkling on the Taiwan Strait. After magma erupting on the seabed, Penghu archipelago is mainly formed by cooling rocks that go through different weathering and erosion for a long period. Therefore, the nature landscape of island is extremely unique and varied basalt as principle. Base on “Law of cultural assets preservation”, the government notified Small Baishayu, Jishanyu and Dinggouyu as “Natural reservation area of basalts” in 1992, and prohibiting human to change and to destroy the original nature states.
Basalt is formed of cooling lava from the earth’s crust. When basalt comes through the action of cooling and contracting, it easily becomes six-angled crack faces; that is called joint. Because basalt lava flow and vent locate in reactive different positions and lava flow runs rises and falls of geography, it is interesting that we can see pillar joints stand flatly, bending over, vertically and other structures on southern of Jinyu, northwest bay on Cimei and northeast bay on Cimei in Penghu County. In addition, there are many onion-shaped weathering, honeycombed rock, wave erosion platform, wave erosion arch, pot holes and other landscapes everywhere in Penghu archipelago.
